3 Myths About Starting a Motivational Speaking Career and Business

Like in any industry, myths tend to precede real knowledge and it's time to debunk some of those false ways of thinking and false bits of information. Myths hurt any motivational speaking career because they often present themselves as barriers for a growing and thriving business.

People often ask me the same kinds of questions over and over - how to make more money with motivational speaking or how to get bookings for motivational speaking. What these people don't realize is that the answers to all of these questions come when they deal with the three myths listed below.

The first most common myth that people in a motivational speaking career have is that money is bad. As a result, these people inherently pick low paying speaking engagements or worse yet work for free because it's all they think they can attain. These are often the same people asking me how to get bookings for motivational speaking. Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about the people who are using free speaking gigs as leverage to get their foot in the door or to build credibility and notoriety in their niche as an expert. I'm talking about the people who seem to think that money will eventually come despite not ever being paid a dime!

Here's what I learned. When I got serious about learning how to make money with motivational speaking, I decided to get "myself" out of the way. Once I got old ways of thinking and doing out of my motivational speaking career, I found that there were people who were willing to pay me a ton of money just to speak. That's the revelation I got and the revelation you need to receive today!

The second most common myth in motivational speaking I hear is that motivation is all you need. Wrong! I have an acronym that I teach people about that kind of thinking - MDPYM (Motivation doesn't pay your mortgage). One of the things I learned early in my speaking career is that just because I was motivated didn't mean I could pay my bills!

Now, I teach people to get rid of this kind of thinking because it simply doesn't do much for them. In fact, I teach the people I mentor to get motivated by finding different ways to get people to give them money. As they learn how to make money with motivational speaking they essentially learn to start the cycle of earning to help more and more people.

The last motivational speaking myth I hear most often is that one must work harder in order to make more money. Sorry folks! That kind of thinking is again wrong! My Dad was the hardest working man in my life but he never made more than ,000 annually. He was the model hard worker but did he have the kind of pay that matched his effort?

Then I learned about working smart which again, is only half of the picture. The other half of the picture is working right. The truth is that it doesn't matter how smart you work. If you're not working right, you're still off. In this motivational speaking industry, people often beat themselves silly trying to fulfill their egos instead of filling their pocketbook. I also often find people who don't have a clue about the kinds of needs that their target niche market has and as a result, they don't market themselves correctly in their niche.

Speak Clearly - The Top 7 Tricks to Instantly Improve the Clarity of Your Speech

"I'm sorry, what? I can't understand you." Have you ever heard this line? Then you probably know how embarrassing it can be to repeat something over and over again. Miscommunication can and will hold you back in today's fast-paced, international business environment. Too many people are hiding their gifts, talents and knowledge from the world due to a fear of speaking up and being misunderstood. Are you one of them?

1) Slow Down

It is common sense, really; the faster you speak, the harder it is for your listener to understand. The easiest way to instantly increase the clarity of your speech is to simply slow down.

2) Pause

Pauses are effective little tools that can be employed in a number of situations. Use them to clearly separate sentences and when changing topics.

3) Speak Up

If you want to say something, really say it! Stand up straight, take a deep breath and speak on the exhale. Don't cover your mouth with your hands, a book or your notes. Make eye contact with your listeners and speak directly to them, not down to the floor or to your slides.

4) Articulate Word Endings

In our haste to get our messages out, we often times fail to enunciate word endings - the grammatical markers at the ends of words, such as the plural 's' or past tense 'ed.' If you don't articulate these sounds, it sounds like you're making very basic grammatical errors.

5) Use Clear Consonants

Here are a few examples of commonly confused consonant sounds: /b/ & /p/, /d/ & /t/, /g/ & /k/, /v/ & /f/. The first sound in each pair is voiced, whereas the second sound is voiceless.

Place your hand in front of your mouth while you say these pairs out loud:

gate/Kate

girl/curl

game/came

If you are articulating the /g/ and /k/ sounds correctly, you should feel an explosion of air when you make the /k/ sound.

6) Use Consistent Word Stress

To a native English speaker, a certain word stress is considered appropriate or inappropriate depending on where the person is from.

"Inappropriate" word stress can really rub listeners the wrong way because it deviates from their norm and indicates that the speaker is an "other" - an outsider. This can be quite FRUStrating (US)/frusTRATing (UK) for the non-native speaker who is just trying to get his point across.

"So which variety is correct?" I always recommend sticking to the form you are most comfortable with. Try to be consistent with whichever variety suits you best.

7. Speak Simply

Never use a long word where a short one will do. This is a common rule most people have heard, but unfortunately very few put it into practice. Your main goal in every spoken interaction should be to have your message understood. Do this by simplifying your vocabulary and using common English words.

Presentation Audiences - 5 Barriers To Active Listening And How Public Speakers Overcome Them

As a speaker it might seem remarkable for some of our audience not to listen to us. But it's not remarkable. It's true. And there are good reasons for an audience being inattentive. Many of the reasons are down to us as speakers -- and there are things that we must do about it.

Information overload. It's a fact that we give too much information in a speech or presentation. We use extensive bullet points or lists such as these! We often have more than one PowerPoint slide for each 5 minutes of talk (sometimes many more). We use too many examples, analogies or case studies. In all cases the listening powers of the audience are being dealt a disservice. Less information is more. Audience Preoccupation. An audience's travails at home, in the office or on the sports field can leave them underwhelmed when it comes to our speech. As speakers we have the duty to know, or at least understand, our audience. If industry redundancies are in the air when we speak to the Manufacturing Association their thoughts will be elsewhere. If the big match was last night or tonight then we'd better be prepared. Think ahead. When we speak at the rate of some 150 words per minute our audience might well be thinking ahead at the rate of 600 or 700 words a minute. They might be pursuing a tangent that we left a moment ago. Or they might be puzzling over something that's not quite clear. In all these instance our duty as a speaker is to be alert to their situation. We need to build structure and organization in our speech. We must use a good outline and make distinct recognizable points. We must use repetition to emphasize these points. And we must be alert to audience reaction as we speak. If the eyes glaze over, then there's something wrong with our presentation. Noise. Not all our public speaking will be in a rarefied auditorium with pitch perfect acoustics. Afraid not. For most of us will become familiar with speaking in a noisy conference room, a seminar in the basement or next to the hotel kitchen. And to exacerbate the environment, we should also note that a good proportion of our audience is likely to have some form of hearing impairment -- that's the way it is. We have to accommodate it. Prior preparation will help. We can ensure that our audience is as close as they can be. We can ensure that the seating is raked towards us and we can ensure that the catering team roll out the coffee trolleys once we have finished. Beyond that -- speak up, tone up and emphasize the key points. Audience exhaustion. We should be alert to the audience's physical tiredness. Their active listening to a day or two of conference speeches is exhausting. If we are less fortunate to be speaking at the end of an event we need to be prepared: be ready with some participative exercises, change the pace or use more multimedia.

Tackling the 5 challenges of a non-listening audience is not hard work. We need to project enthusiasm and interest in our topic. We have to appear animated and fired-up -- even if it is the final day of a 3-day conference. Our speech should present clear tangible benefits to our audience -- providing good reason for their attention. And we have to structure our speech to meet their attention needs. It should begin on a solid footing, have a recognizable middle and end on a high note. By keeping the speech simple and uncluttered we ensure that the barriers to listening are easily overcome.

Free Eulogy Samples

For people who are going to write eulogies the first time, it will be easier for them if they had a sample that could serve as a basis for their funeral speech. Free eulogy samples can be gotten from books and the Web. They must be used as guides for writing and customizing one's eulogy speech.

It doesn't matter how useful free eulogy samples are to you, it would still be best if your eulogy contained your own words, feelings and thought about the person you just lost. Besides, eulogies should be personal.

A way to come up with a good eulogy is to just find tips and suggestions that will help you write your own eulogy.

Free Eulogy Samples

Here are a few.

1. Collect your material. Gather facts about the person - age, important dates, favorite places, and so on. Then think about fond memories with the person or a behavior of the person that makes people remember him or her well. Talk to other family members, friends and colleagues and ask them about their moments with the deceased. Ask their opinions and see if you arrive at a very good idea.

2. Choose a theme. What gives a eulogy unity is a theme. A theme will help you and your listeners distinguish the patterns of the life of the deceased. Your theme may focus on the good things the deceased has done to you and to other people; his or her values and their influence to your life; the person's behavior and lifestyle; and the most fond and funny moments you two shared while he or she was still alive.

3. Organize your speech. You may want to use one index card per significant memory. In this way, you can easily filter which memories you want to include in your eulogy speech.

4. Write your draft. Write your first draft using the information you collected and the memories you wrote in index cards. You can go through each index card and choose the best memories to include in your speech. Use a word processor so that editing your speech will be easier afterwards. Put your focus on the beginning and ending of your speech. Do not try hard to be formal; use a conversational tone. Include humor if you wish to. It is an effective way to ease the pain and tension a little if you are able to laugh at things. Include appreciation and gratitude not only to the deceased, but also to the people he or she has shared life with.

5. Rehearse your speech. If you are not used to delivering speeches, aside from the free eulogy samples you took, you may also want to borrow materials that will help you do the public speaking trick. Rehearse your speech to find awkward lines; this is your chance to do some editing. Remember to calm down and be natural. Nobody is against you so you do not have to fear anything.

Public Speaking - The Different Forms

There are different forms of public speaking, and you could indeed, be a chameleon, and wear different hats, but the best approach at first is to specialize in a particular area of public speaking. Butcher, Baker or Candlestick maker, you cant be all things to all people, so you must DECIDE AND SPECIALIZE.

The first type of speech, were going to speak about, is the informative style, let's use an example, prior to Dr. XYZ's findings, it was scientifically believed by AMA, that babies could grow wings. Your stating facts, and in informational speaking, you are mostly delivering factual information, someone is in need of knowing how to weatherproof their home, and your Greg the builder and give speeches on how to weatherproof people's homes, this is informational speaking.

The next form of public speaking, we're going to speak about is ceremony, like giving a toast at a wedding or a birthday, this is ceremonial. Bobby is called on to make a toast, at his brother Johnny's wedding, Bobby picks up a glass of champagne, takes his fork and tap, tap, tap's, it on the glass to get everyone's attention, and he says something like this, to my brother Johnny and his beautiful bride, may their relationship and love, last forever, and may the roof above us, never fall in, and may everyone here all of our friends, may we never fall out. That's a ceremonial form of public speaking.

Public Speaking - The Different Forms

Now were getting really hot, here comes the persuasive form of public speaking, most people, love the idea, of getting something for nothing, I am not here trying to get something for nothing, nothing from nothing leaves nothing, most of you who know me, and think your getting this lesson for nothing, know better. Because before you get out of here, your gonna pay me some money, those of you who don't have a study guide, you need to buy, one-two. That's an example of persuasive public speaking, with the purpose of selling something to someone.

And lastly, there is the Extemporaneous, and that word is a mouthful, which means, impromptu, spur of the moment, James, on the reality show survivor digital, is about to get voted off at tonight's tribal Council. He decides to give an extemporaneous, speech to possibly change the course of the vote. He stands up and says, if I offended any of you, I am sorry, but if you let me stay, I promise to work hard, to earn your trust. I know I didn't get to know a lot of you, but if you keep me here, I look forward to hearing about you and your families, because of James's, impromptu speech, he was not voted off, that night, also known as inspired speaking.
