It is no coincidence that throughout history, most individuals who have been cited as being extremely influential people have also been cited as being exceptionally powerful speakers.
From Franklin Roosevelt to Ronald Regan; Susan B. Anthony to Oprah Winfrey; Jack Welch to Steve Jobs. When they spoke (or speak), people listened.
Being an engaging and persuasive public speaker is not a gift. It is a skill. Furthermore, it is a skill that anyone can learn. And while everyone's public speaking style is different, there are five core traits that exceptional and influential speakers adhere to:
Clear
o Always have a well-defined, overall message and a goal. Is your goal to inform? Educate? Inspire? Persuade? What is your call to action?
o Present information in a logical, easy-to-follow format.
o Uses vivid examples/metaphors/analogies to support or explain key points.
Concise
o Keep speeches short. The best speeches are no longer than 15-20 minutes long. The longer you talk, the more vague--and less memorable--your key messages become to your audience.
o Never have more than three key messages in a speech.
Captivating
o The ability to immediately connect with your audience is critical to being perceived as an engaging speaker. This means every speech must be customized to address the key interests or needs of each audience. More work for you? Yes. Greater ROI? Absolutely!
o Use vocal delivery and body language effectively for maximum impact. 93% of an audience's first impression of you is dictated by your vocal delivery and body language.
o Do not rely on PowerPoint slides. Slides take the attention away from you. The more they are used, the more your audience disengages with you.
Consistently Practice
o As with any endeavor, the more you practice, the better you become. Practice every speech at least three times aloud.
o Practice in front of someone.
o Videotape or audiotape your practice sessions.
o Time yourself.
Consistently Critiqued
Feedback is the greatest teaching tool. Ask for and respect honest feedback.
